What is #100 Days Of Writing?
#100 Days Of Writing is all about gentle writing productivity. There are no rules, other than this: show up to your writing every day for 100 days.
Day 1 will be Thursday 12th September 2024, and day 100 will be Friday 20th December 2024, but you can start anytime.
Who is it for?
Anyone who writes!
It works particularly well for those who want to establish a regular writing habit, have a project to work on, want to experiment with something new, or simply want to fall back in love with writing.
'Showing up' can look however you want. Five minutes of note scribbling? That counts. Research reading? That counts too, just as much as writing 1000 words.
Our guiding concepts are gentleness and curiosity. The point is regular connection to your work without judgement.
How it works
1. Subscribe here to take part.
It’s completely free to participate. Anyone can join in.
I’m running this this via a second Substack publication to keep everything clear and separate from my primary membership, The Inkwell. Sign up to get project updates and invitations to our weekly writing room. If you are already a member of The Inkwell, this will not alter your subscription over there.
2. Join the #100DaysOfWriting community
Follow me on Substack Notes and/or Instagram if that’s your thing @katherineclementswriter. I’ll be posting to both most days. On Instagram, use the hashtag #100DaysOfWriting to find others taking part.
3. Introduce yourself
Pop on over to this post and say hi 👋
4. Choose your poison
If you’d like to join me for weekly co-writing sessions, and take part in weekly accountability threads, upgrade your subscription. For total transparency, I’m including a low-cost paid option to cover my costs in creating this space for us all, and because I believe that writers should always be paid for their work – an important principle for me and one I hope you’ll support. If you can’t afford a subscription, email me and I’ll comp you one no questions asked.
5. Tell the world!
I strongly recommend telling the world you’re taking part. Post on Notes, Instagram, or another social channel of your choice. Tell a friend. Daily posting is a way of staying accountable and sharing what you learn. Do you know a writer who might like to get involved? Send them my way!
6. Get writing!
FAQ
Do I need to have a project to work on?
No. You can show up in whatever way suits you. If you don’t know where to start, consider finding some writing prompts to help. There are lots of resources online.
Can I use the challenge to finish my book/script/phd thesis etc.?
Of course! I encourage goals, if they work for you. I have my own goal – to write a new novella during the challenge. Share your goal with the community and keep us posted on progress.
What if I miss a day?
No problem! Just pick it up the next day. Remember the concept of gentleness – this is a judgement-free zone! I encourage you to share with the community if you miss a day. It will help others who might be wobbling.
I missed the start date! Can I join now?
You can start your own day count any time. You can jump into the community at any point, too.
Do I need to post on social media? Sounds like a lot of work.
No. If social media is not for you, that’s fine. What other way can you hold yourself accountable? Tell a friend or writer pal, create your own mini-group on WhatsApp, or tick days off on a wall planner. I recommend joining in with the weekly accountability thread, too.
What happens in the writing room?
We write together! It’s hosted on Zoom, every Friday from 2-3pm UK time. Check the time in your time zone here. We’ll check in, I’ll share a weekly writing prompt, and then we’ll write in silence for 50 minutes. You don’t need to speak or turn on your camera.
How do the accountability threads work?
I’ll post a new thread every Monday starting Monday 16th September. You’ll be notified by email and invited to share your progress in comments. I hope it’ll be a way for us to chat, share experiences and observations and keep each accountable and motivated. I’ll be hanging out there Mon-Fri.
You say it’s free but the subscription costs money, why?
It is free to sign up and take part. There is a charge to join the weekly writing room and the comments on accountability threads to cover my costs in creating this space for us all, and because I believe that writers (that’s me!) should always be paid for their work – an important principle for me and one I hope you’ll support. If you can’t afford a subscription, email me and I’ll comp you one no questions asked.
Why is there an annual subscription if the challenge only runs for 100 days?
Because Substack doesn’t let me change the system 🤷🏻♀️. Monthly subscriptions will run for four months only, September to December 2024. You can unsubscribe at any time. ‘Annual’ subscriptions are a one-off cost for the whole four months at a reduced rate. When the challenge is over, after 31 December 2024, no further payment will be taken and subs will not be renewed.
Who are you?
Good question! My name is Katherine Clements. I’m an author, editor and coach for writers. I write (mostly) dark historical fiction, though during #100 Days I’ll be turning my hand to something a little different. You can read about my books and my coaching work at my website, or check out The Inkwell, where I’m growing a community of ambitious authors.
